Recycling Experiment


1.  Dig a hole as deep as you can.  Keep the dirt at the side.

2.  In the hole, place a meat carcass, vegetables, can, plastic bag, paper, etc.
Take a photo of the objects as your "before" photo.

3.  Replace the dirt into the hole and mark it so you can find it later.

4.  Write down your guesses.  Example, the paper will disappear, the meat wil
still be there, etc.

5.  Several months later, dig up the hole again. Record what you find.  
How does this compare to your expectations?
Take an "after" photo for comparison.

Thank you for your experiment. We went up onto our nature trail and dug a
hole. In it we put paper, orange peel, a plastic bottle. We will look at
them on the last day of school, and then we will check on it in July and in
August.

We also watched interesting science lesson on video entitled "A New
Alchemy." At the New Alchemy Institute in East Falmouth Massachusetts (my
home state) research is being conducted on ways to grow food and build
shelters without polluting or depleting the environment. The students
learned about composting, solar architecture, symbiosis, and the balance of
nature.

They saw that organic gardening is based on the concept that the tastiest
and healthiest vegetables and fruits are those grown in soils enriched by
organic materials not chemical fertilizers. They saw how you could build
fertility through organic means, using composting. By using organic
gardening you are able to recycle what nature grows, while preserving an
essential natural resource, soil. They saw how you could change worthless
material (garbage) into valuable material (nutrients).

We are also doing an experiement with this. We filled three flower pots
with dried beans and one pot held potting soil, another sand, another
compost. We are comparing the qualities of solis and seeing how the soil
type effects the bean growth. We are carefully trying the light. air, and
water.
